“Fat Girl” is a satirical social commentary about the way we view and treat people of size. It is a scripted/fictional web series based around everyday situations that turn into blatant references about the character’s weight.
The idea for the series came from a conversation surrounding body-positivity I was having with a few of my friends. Each of them had a story about the subtle recognition their body size seems to conjure, or the situations they face being ‘fat’ or ‘plus size’ living in New York. I, also, have a strong need to have plus size character drive a show. It’s a pretty rare occurrence in mainstream media for there to be someone outside the ‘norm’ to carry a storyline — that in itself is a powerful statement as far as self-acceptance and the
image of what a fat looks like in according to sizes and what is available for an average size woman.
Unfortunately the word ‘fat’ has a negative connotation, and because the title has the word in it, the production has to be careful with offending viewership. The biggest challenge this series faces is trying to put forth the message that body size shouldn’t dictate how people are treated. The main character is not a representation for every ‘fat’ or ‘plus-size’ person, nor does the character play to the ‘unhappy fat girl’ stereotype. She is vehicle to tell real stories of living in a bigger body.
